Background

Zhenxing “Zane” Bi is a Technology Specialist in the Washington D.C. office of Fish & Richardson. Dr. Bi’s practice focuses on patent drafting and prosecution in the areas of advanced semiconductor technology, emerging memory technology, artificial intelligence accelerator architectures, deep neural network algorithms, machine learning, nanomaterials synthesis and characterization.

Prior to joining the firm, Dr. Bi worked as a research scientist at IBM Research since 2013, lead a cross-functional alliance team on key module process innovations and drove the logic CMOS technology strategy to improve the semiconductor hardware performance for next generation server and mobile applications. His team unveiled the world’s first 7nm FinFET logic chip with SiGe channel and EUV lithography in 2015, and the world’s first 5nm Gate-All-Around (GAA) transistor silicon chip in 2017. Dr. Bi also worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory as a research associate on advanced integrated nanotechnology development from 2011 to 2013.

Dr. Bi was an IBM Master Invertor for creating valuable patents and donating valuable invention – related service time, reviewing invention disclosures and portfolio strategy, evaluating clusters of IBM patents for sales and continued maintenance, providing competitive analysis of competitors’ IP, and assisting in “proof” analysis of companies’ potential infringements of IBM patents.

Dr. Bi also served as an invited reviewer for 23 technical journals include Applied Physics Letters, Journal of Crystal Growth, Applied Surface Science, Acta Materialia, Journal of Thin Solid Films, Nanotechnology, etc.

Dr. Bi holds 119 US patents and patent applications, 71 peer reviewed journal articles, and 36 conference proceedings with a total citation of 1600 times as of Jan 2019.
