About Rick

Richard J. Anderson is a senior principal in the Twin Cities office of Fish & Richardson P.C. From 2013-2021, Mr. Anderson served as the firm’s chief operating officer, where he had global responsibility for all firm business services functions, including oversight of the firm’s financial management. During his tenure as COO, Mr. Anderson led the restructuring and transformation of all firm business services functions with a focus on innovation, strategic operations management, and continuous improvement, including the planning and implementation of a firm-wide business services hub in Minneapolis that includes more than 250 firm employees across numerous business services functions. As COO, Mr. Anderson served as an ex officio member of the firm’s management committee and chaired the firm’s intake committee, which is responsible for evaluating new business opportunities and managing ethical conflicts.

Prior to his appointment as COO, Mr. Anderson served as an elected member of the firm’s management committee from 1999-2013, helping to create and implement the firm’s strategic plan and expand the firm’s footprint. In addition, from 2002-2010, he served as leader of the firm’s patent group, one of the firm’s largest practice groups, and during his tenure led a restructuring and modernization of the firm’s market-leading transactional IP practice. Under his leadership, the group established Fish’s reputation as the premier firm for patent portfolio strategy, planning, prosecution, and management, and became a leader in handling post-grant validity proceedings.

Mr. Anderson co-founded the firm’s Twin Cities office in 1994, where he built a substantial transactional IP practice over the following two decades, and also served as firm-wide hiring principal during a time when the firm’s number of offices tripled.
