Overview

Dan Smith’s practice focuses on patent prosecution, client counseling, portfolio development, and post-grant proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.

As a member of the firm’s post-grant group, Dan has extensive experience in post-grant proceedings from the perspective of both the petitioner and the patent owner, and to date has represented firm clients in more than 60 PTAB trials. In 2020, he was recognized as one of the top 50 attorneys representing petitioners at the PTAB by Managing Intellectual Property.

Dan’s practice is technically focused on the computer-related, electrical, and mechanical arts, and he has represented clients in cases involving a wide range of technologies, including network systems and protocols, hybrid vehicle drivetrains, wireless communications, heated flooring systems, trampolines, and semiconductor fabrication.

Prior to law school, Dan spent over a decade as a lead software developer for a telecommunications company, authoring complex call control and billing applications. He has hands-on experience with distributed system design and implementation, network protocol design, web services design and implementation, database design and management, multi-threaded application design, real-time system design and implementation, as well as extensive software development experience in a variety of languages, including C, C++, Java, Python, PHP, JavaScript, and Visual Basic.
