Mark D. Kirkland

fr-memorial-for-mark-kirkland-with-type

On Friday, January 29, our friend and colleague Mark Kirkland passed away after a long illness. Mark joined Fish in our Silicon Valley office in 1995 and was a trusted advisor, mentor, and dear friend to many. Mark started his career as an electrical design engineer before moving into law and coming to Fish where he provided intellectual property guidance for clients in all technology areas. He spent the later years of his career working with start-ups impacted by the America Invents Act of 2011. All who knew Mark, knew him for his strength, courage, determination, and resourcefulness.

Mark lived his life with passion: for his family, for his work, and for his “Fighting Irish.” A proud Notre Dame alumnus, Mark exemplified the words of The Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, Notre Dame’s president for 35 years: “Whatever you value, be committed to it and let nothing distract you from this goal. The uncommitted life, like Plato’s unexamined life, is not worth living.” Mark was deeply committed to those things he valued. He will be missed.

Donations may be made in Mark’s memory to The Mike and Josie Harper Cancer Research Institute at Notre Dame, his beloved alma mater, and the Gene Upshaw Memorial Tahoe Forest Cancer Center, their local cancer center that provided medical and personal support for the family over the last ten years.
