Overview

Hyun Jin (HJ) In, Ph.D., advises clients on complex patent matters across post-grant, prosecution, and litigation, with a particular emphasis on navigating the interplay among these practice areas. 

With extensive experience across several fields of intellectual property practice, HJ is uniquely positioned to navigate his clients through complex legal issues at the strategic nexus of patent prosecution, post-grant, and litigation. He focuses his practice on post-grant proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board and has appeared in more than 100 proceedings. He also maintains a robust prosecution practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, where he helps manage the IP portfolios for clients of all sizes from a wide range of industries, from startups to global corporations. HJ also works closely with clients in the U.S., Korea, Japan, and beyond to secure and enforce patents, including standard essential patents, that are core to their technologies and business objectives. 

Before joining Fish & Richardson, HJ conducted cutting-edge research at the Naval Research Laboratory and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. With a deep technical background, he readily grasps the most complex technological concepts that underlie his clients’ legal matters. He has extensive experience in a broad array of technologies, including semiconductors, batteries, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, automotive devices and systems, medical devices, artificial intelligence nanotechnology, optics, and chemistry, among many others. With a solid foundation in the sciences and sharp legal acumen, HJ speaks the language of both technology and the law. 

In addition to his patent practice, HJ is committed to improving the lives of others. He maintains an active pro bono practice focused on improving the lives of immigrants and other minorities.
