Fish & Richardson Named #1 PTAB Law Firm of 2020 by Managing Intellectual Property

Fish & Richardson has been named the #1 law firm at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) for 2020 by Managing Intellectual Property (MIP) for the fifth consecutive year. Fish took the top spots for representing both petitioners and patent owners, with 104 and 94 appearances, respectively. Fish's almost 200 appearances in 2020 are over 60% higher than the next firm on MIP's 2020 rankings.

The annual MIP survey analyzes data from the Docket Navigator database to determine top petitioners, patent owners, law firms and attorneys at the PTAB for petitions. In the 2020 rankings, released on January 11, 2021, MIP stated that "The king of the PTAB last year was undoubtedly Fish & Richardson."

"Fish has built an outstanding team of seasoned patent practitioners and IP litigators that understand the strategic importance of PTAB for petitioner and patent owner clients and approach post-grant proceedings with the clients' business goals top of mind," said Karl Renner, principal and co-chair of Fish & Richardson's Post-Grant Practice Group. "We have seen a tremendous rise in PTAB challenges over the last year and I believe the depth and breadth of our post-grant team's expertise along with our ability to deliver maximum value through proceedings has solidified our position as the undisputed leader in PTAB matters."

Nine Fish attorneys were listed among the top 50 petitioner and patent owner attorneys at the PTAB in 2020. Renner ranked as the #1 petitioner attorney in 2020 with 57 post-grant proceedings, which represent more than a quarter (28%) of Fish's total appearances during the year. Renner also managed 21 proceedings on the patent owner side, ranking #37 on the patent owner attorney list. Kim Leung and Dan Smith also ranked among the top 50 petitioner attorneys. Dorothy Whelan, Timothy Riffe, Jennifer Huang, Kenneth Darby, Michael Hawkins and Nicholas Stephens ranked among the top 50 patent owner attorneys.
