Fish & Richardson Named #1 PTAB Law Firm in the U.S. for 2016 by Managing Intellectual Property Magazine

Fish & Richardson is the #1 law firm at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) for 2016 according to Managing Intellectual Property (MIP) magazine and its latest PTAB survey. Fish represented petitioners and respondents in 207 proceedings handling 34 more PTAB cases overall than its closest competitor. Fish is also the #1 most active firm representing petitioners at the PTAB for the third year in a row, with 125 petitions filed 58 more petitions than the second place firm on this list.

Karl Renner, principal and co-chair of Fish's Post-Grant Practice Group, was the second most active attorney at the PTAB overall in 2016, appearing in 60 proceedings. Fish attorney Michael Kane was also on the most active list, appearing in 34 proceedings. Michael Hawkins appeared on the list of top petitioner attorneys at the PTAB, with 21 petitions.

This is the third year that MIP has ranked the leading PTAB law firms as part of its annual international IP survey. MIP's analysis relied on the Docket Navigator database, which showed that a total of 1,758 petitions were filed at the PTAB in 2016, making it the second-busiest year after the 1,797 petitions in 2015.

"The PTAB continues to be of significant strategic importance for both petitioners and patent owners, and Fish is honored to be the law firm that companies most often turn to when the stakes are high," said Renner.

Dorothy Whelan, principal and co-chair of Fish's Post-Grant Practice Group also adds, "There is no firm practicing at the PTAB with more technical know-how, patent prosecution skill, and litigation savvy. Our patent practitioners and IP litigators work together to maximize the impact of post-grant proceedings, to the strategic benefit of our clients."

Fish offers complete patent prosecution and strategic counseling services, including worldwide patent portfolio management, due diligence, freedom-to-operate investigations, licensing, post-grant proceedings, and appeals. Fish's Patent Group works with companies - ranging from Fortune 500 corporations to newly formed startups - across all industries.

Founded in 1990, MIP is an international magazine for in-house IP counsel and a leading source of news and analysis on all IP developments worldwide. MIP used Docket Navigator to conduct an analysis of PTAB petitions filed in 2016 to determine the most-active companies and people at the PTAB.
