Daniel Shim leads complex, multijurisdictional intellectual property disputes across North America, Europe, and Asia. A registered U.S. patent attorney with more than 20 years of combined law firm and in-house experience, Daniel brings a client-focused insider’s perspective shaped by his prior role leading global IP litigation for one of the world’s largest consumer electronics companies.
Clients turn to Daniel for seasoned judgment in matters where legal strategy must align across multiple jurisdictions. Before joining Fish, he served as principal legal counsel and group leader for Samsung Electronics' IP Legal Team, where he led global IP strategy and litigation for the company's consumer products business. Managing a team of litigators, he oversaw disputes against some of the largest players in the consumer electronics industry. His matters have spanned virtually every major patent forum in the world – U.S. district courts; the International Trade Commission; the Unified Patent Court (UPC); the UK High Court; the German Regional Courts in Munich, Mannheim, and Düsseldorf; and the patent courts of the Netherlands, France, China, Korea, Japan, India, and Brazil.
Daniel focuses on patent litigation and counseling involving telecommunications, consumer electronics, mobile devices, network equipment, video codec technologies, wireless charging, and display technologies. He is particularly well positioned to handle standard essential patent and FRAND disputes, and clients rely on him for building effective FRAND narratives, developing strategies for global rate-setting proceedings, fielding anti-suit injunctions, analyzing injunction risk, and assessing licensing exposure in disputes that must be coordinated across jurisdictions.
Throughout his career, Daniel has lived and worked in many places that are home to key venues in global IP litigation, including Belgium, where he focused on fielding UPC-related issues for Samsung Electronics. Fluent in Korean, he spent more than 14 years practicing in Seoul and previously practiced at a Washington, D.C.-based law firm prior to joining Samsung.
Outside of work, Daniel enjoys spending time with his wife and two teenage sons and working on his golf game.
