Craig Deutsch is a leading practitioner in representing patent owners and petitioners in post-grant proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB).
Sought out for his extensive experience working both to defend and to challenge patents before the PTAB, Craig has handled more than 100 post-grant proceedings for his clients. In recognition of his significant post-grant practice, Managing Intellectual Property named Craig a Top PTAB Practitioner in 2020.
Craig’s post-grant experience helps inform his prosecution work, in which he drafts and prosecutes patents for utility and industrial design subjects in the U.S. and abroad, conducts patent validity and infringement investigations and analyses, and advises on strategic portfolio management. Clients frequently turn to Craig for guidance in navigating the challenges and strategies unique to prosecuting and defending design patents. He regularly shares his insights on design patent issues through speaking engagements and published articles.
Craig has technical experience spanning mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical inventions, including mobile and connected devices, electromechanical equipment, building control systems, medical devices, oil extraction and production, and consumer products. He has prosecuted and defended design patents for consumer electronics and wearables, graphical user interfaces, automotive design, apparel, and industrial products.
Before joining Fish, Craig was intellectual property counsel for 3M Co. and worked as a mechanical design engineer for Honeywell International Inc. His in-house IP counsel experience and hands-on engineering background enable him to advise clients with a firsthand, insider’s business perspective on tackling IP issues.
