Fish & Richardson Announces Dr. Herbert Kunz Joins Firm as Managing Principal of Munich, Germany Office

Boston, MA, August 6, 2015 - Fish & Richardson announced today that Dr. Herbert Kunz has joined the firm as the Managing Principal of its Munich office and as a Principal in its Patent Group.  Previously, Dr. Kunz was a Partner and Head of the IP Patent Prosecution Team in the Munich office of Olswang LLP.  Dr. Kunz will bring a team of four people with him to Fish’s Munich office including one attorney, a technology specialist, a paralegal, and an administrative assistant.

Dr. Kunz has been a German Patent Attorney and a European Trademark and Design Attorney since 1997, and a European Patent Attorney since 1999.  He will continue to focus his practice on patent infringement disputes; German, European and international patent prosecution, oppositions and appeals; licensing; patent and trademark law; and Freedom-to-operate opinions.  His technical areas of expertise include solid-state physics, physical chemistry, optics, telecommunication, semiconductors and computer-related inventions, physics, mechanical engineering, and electro-technology. 

Some of Dr. Kunz’s key clients include New Balance and several German clients, including Astyx and Merz Dental.  He has represented many clients before the German Federal Patent Court, the German Patent Office, the European Patent Office, and the German Federal Supreme Court (Bundesgerichtshof, BGH).

Fish opened its Munich office in 2007 and handles a wide range of European intellectual property (IP) matters from Munich, including patent prosecution and patent litigation, opposition practice at the EPO, trademark, design, unfair competition, and antitrust matters.

Dr. Kunz was appointed an Honorary Judge of the Social Court Munich in 2012.  He received his Ph.D. in solid-state physics from the University of Berlin in 1992, his Diploma in physics from the University of Hamburg in 1987, and his Master of Advanced Study in physics from the University of Cambridge in 1984.
