SEPs: How the Battery Industry Can Benefit From Standardization and Patent Cooperation
Friday, March 15, 2024 | 9:30-10:00 a.m. ET

Standardization is poised to dramatically impact the battery industry. Efforts are underway to establish and promulgate global standards for various aspects of battery technology, such as electric vehicle charging and battery safety. Due to its ubiquity, standardization can raise fundamentally important issues with respect to intellectual property rights. By definition, a technological standard is intended to be widely implemented in the mass consumer market. However, standardized technologies are often protected by patents (standard essential patents, or SEPs). A delicate balance must therefore be achieved between protecting the IP rights of owners of patented standards technology while promoting widespread implementation of the standardized technology. This talk will address how the battery industry can benefit from standardization and patent cooperation, and how individual companies can position themselves to reap those benefits.
