Overview

Yunbo Guo, Ph.D., is a patent prosecutor and strategist who helps clients to protect innovation and build valuable patent portfolios. With more than 20 years of combined experience as a researcher and patent prosecutor, Yunbo excels at aligning patent strategy with business objectives across a broad range of advanced and emerging technologies, including semiconductors, optics and photonics, artificial intelligence (AI), electronics, and computer and networking technologies.

Yunbo’s practice focuses on high-quality patent drafting and prosecution, strategic intellectual property counseling, freedom-to-operate (FTO) analyses, infringement and invalidity opinions, due diligence, and global patent portfolio development and management. He represents a diverse client base — from startups and entrepreneurs to research institutions and multinational corporations — delivering practical, results-oriented IP solutions in highly competitive and technically complex markets.

Yunbo’s deep technical expertise spans cutting-edge fields, including:

  • Semiconductors and memory devices
  • Artificial intelligence, machine learning, and blockchain
  • Optics and photonics: holography, AR/VR, photodetectors, optical computing, optical networking, lasers, LiDAR, integrated optics, fiber optics, displays, and 3D imaging
  • Autonomous vehicles, electric motors, and microcontrollers
  • Imaging systems, medical devices, and nanotechnology
  • Computer hardware and networking technologies

A native Mandarin speaker, Yunbo provides specialized guidance to Chinese companies and innovators seeking robust U.S. patent protection. He helps clients navigate U.S. patent law, manage risks, strengthen market positions, and support global expansion.

Before transitioning to law, Yunbo was a research scientist, where he developed a photodetector integrated photonic crystal structure with applications in biosensors, ultrasound imaging systems, and acoustic transducer arrays. He also conducted interdisciplinary research in biomedical engineering at the University of Michigan, focusing on fiber optics, optofluidics, Raman spectroscopy, and fluorescence immunoassay. During his Ph.D. studies, Yunbo developed a novel photonic crystal sensor for highly sensitive biomolecular detection.

Yunbo is a named inventor on multiple U.S. patents and has authored more than 30 peer-reviewed journal and conference publications. His combination of hands-on invention experience and sophisticated patent practice enables him to quickly understand complex technologies and secure broad, enforceable patent protection that maximizes clients’ commercial impacts.

Outside the office, Yunbo enjoys cheering for his two children at their hockey games and traveling with his family to explore new places and cultures.
