Well-Managed Portfolios Generate Value

Patent strategy is about more than just prosecution and enforcement. An organization’s patenting activities must be aligned with and integrated into its overall business plan if its patent portfolio is to realize its full value. A properly managed patent portfolio should thus generate revenue for an organization by protecting its investments, defending it against competitors, and balancing its asset maintenance costs.

Portfolio Management Strategies

Patent portfolio management requires an organization to make critical and often risky decisions about how best to use its IP assets to its advantage, and involves strategies such as:

  • Obtaining patent protection for new technologies
  • Extracting additional value from its existing patents
  • Expanding its patent portfolio through acquisition and licensing
  • Licensing its technologies to other organizations
  • Selling or abandoning assets that are no longer valuable

Building Portfolios that Work

Fish attorneys work with organizations of all sizes to develop robust patent portfolios that will deliver maximum value back to their businesses. We work with each client to understand their business plan and then devise a uniquely tailored patent strategy that will help push that plan forward. Once we develop a client’s patent portfolio, we then monitor its success and frequently review its assets to ensure that they continue to serve the client’s goals.
