Fish & Richardson attorney Ricardo Bonilla has been named an On the Rise – Top 40 Young Lawyer for 2018 by the American Bar Association (ABA) Young Lawyers Division. This prestigious award is given to attorneys who exemplify a broad range of high achievement, innovation, vision, leadership, and legal and community service. Bonilla will be profiled in the Young Lawyers Division’s TYL magazine this summer.

Bonilla focuses his practice on intellectual property litigation with an emphasis on patents. He has won many high-stakes cases in state and federal courts. As a first-year associate, he helped obtain a jury verdict of over $2 million, along with an award of all attorneys’ fees and costs, in a lawsuit claiming a breach of a purchase agreement. Last year, he led and won a Federal Circuit affirmance of almost $1 million in attorneys’ fees for Bed Bath & Beyond. In another case, he helped end EMG Technology’s nine-year run of litigation against over 100 defendants by convincing a federal court to invalidate two patents related to a navigation interface for mobile websites.

Bonilla is also active in the community. He recently completed a full time, three-month term as an assistant district attorney prosecuting felony and misdemeanor cases through the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office Lawyer on Loan Program. As a Dallas City Lead for the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity, he pairs diverse, first-year law school students with mentors. He also serves on the Dallas Bar Association’s Minority Participation Committee and on the Mock Trial Committee, which organizes the Texas High School Mock Trial Competition.

Bonilla received his J.D., magna cum laude, Order of the Coif, Order of Barristers, National Order of Scribes, from Texas Tech University School of Law in 2012 and his B.S., cum laude, in software engineering from the University of Texas at Dallas in 2009.
