Fish's Juanita Brooks selected by The Recorder as a "2010 Attorney of the Year"

San Diego, CA, January 13, 2011 - Fish & Richardson attorney Juanita Brooks was named an Attorney of the Year by The Recorder in the publication's second annual contest. Brooks was recognized for her work on behalf of Fresenius Medical Care and was one of just 19 attorneys honored statewide by the publication.

“This year’s winners are marked by their perseverance whether fighting long odds, persuading courts to reconsider their own rulings, or getting great trial results in high-profile, high-pressure situations,” said Scott Graham, The Recorder‘s editor in chief.

Brooks secured a defense judgment for Fresenius Medical Care after a monthlong patent infringement trial. The jury returned a unanimous verdict of no infringement on every count after deliberating less than a day in Oakland, California following a nearly four week trial rejecting claims of patent infringement made by Baxter Healthcare Corporation and DEKA Products, Ltd against the Liberty Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) Cycler designed and produced by Fresenius.

The Recorder also cited Brooks' tireless work on behalf of her clients, having tried six cases throughout the country in 2010.

Brooks has a nationwide trial practice, specializing in complex intellectual property litigation. She has handled more than 80 trials in her career and her average yearly caseload includes over 20 active patent cases. Brooks' litigation experience includes numerous cases involving intellectual property, product liability, and qui tam litigation. She was asked by the judiciary to assist in drafting the local patent rules for the Southern District of California.

Every year since 1987, Brooks' peers have voted her as one the Best Lawyers in America. In 2009, she was named to the Minority Corporate Counsel Association’s national list of “Leading Law Firm Rainmakers.” MCCA chose just fourteen attorneys for this honor, and Ms. Brooks is one of four women on the list. She has received numerous other honors including being named one of California's top IP attorneys and top women attorneys and has been named one of San Diego's leading lawyers by multiple organizations.
