Fish & Richardson Hires Eric Schulman, Former In-House Counsel at Uber and Google, as a Principal in its Patent Group

Redwood City, CA, September 12, 2016 - Fish & Richardson announced today that C. Eric Schulman, formerly the Head of Intellectual Property (IP) for Uber Technologies, Inc., has joined the firm's Silicon Valley office as a Principal in its Patent group. Before Uber, Schulman spent more than nine years in-house at Google Inc., where he served most recently as Legal Director. He brings to Fish a broad range of experience including expertise in patent and trademark portfolio development, IP licensing and acquisition, patent post-grant proceedings, patent and trademark litigation, standards bodies, copyright, open source, M&A, commercial transactions, collaborative structures, broad IP strategy, and legal management.

At Uber, Schulman was responsible for all aspects of the company's IP program. He reported directly to the general counsel and was one of seven legal leads for a broader legal team of approximately 180 professionals.

At Google, in addition to serving as Legal Director for five years, Schulman served as Head of Patents for Advertising and Commerce where he managed a team responsible for all aspects of patent strategy including worldwide portfolio development, licensing, and engineering engagement. Prior to that, he served as Head of Licensing, where he managed a team responsible for cross-licensing, inbound and outbound licensing, standards bodies, open source, and M&A diligence including patent diligence for the $12.5 billion Motorola acquisition. Schulman also worked with Google's Chief Economist to develop a stalking horse bid for Nortel's patent portfolio, which was later acquired for $4.5 billion.

"We are excited to have Eric join our Patent group and Silicon Valley office. Eric's experience guiding innovative companies through a wide range of complex IP issues will be a great asset to our clients," said John Hayden, Patent Practice Group Leader at Fish & Richardson. "We have worked with Eric for many years and are thrilled to have him join our team."

In 2013 and 2014 Schulman conceived of, and founded, the License On Transfer (LOT) Network. LOT is an industry-led and independently-run organization that promotes innovation by reducing the number of lawsuits and licensing requests its members receive from Patent Assertion Entities. Schulman currently serves as an Advisory Board member for LOT, which now has 78 member companies and over 575,000 patent assets in its network.

Following law school and prior to going in-house, Schulman was an associate at Fenwick & West and Mintz Levin. He received his J.D. from Boston College Law School, his M.S. in physics from Boston University, and his B.S. in physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
