Overview

A technology specialist and patent agent, Craig Carlson counsels clients ranging from individual inventors and startups to Fortune 100 companies, helping them secure strong patents for their innovations.

Craig prepares and prosecutes patent applications at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and handles inter partes review proceedings at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. His technical expertise includes wide-ranging next-gen technologies across disciplines from digital signal processing, computer architecture, cloud-based computing, and processing systems to integrated circuit design, medical devices, defense, and autonomous vehicles.

In working with clients, Craig digs deep to identify how his clients’ inventions are unique and focuses on helping each client leverage their innovations to their full potential. Craig has helped numerous companies secure patents, but he is most proud of being able to help a new company secure its very first patent, which was essential to its future success.

Before joining Fish & Richardson, Craig worked as an electrical engineer focused on digital signal processing and digital communications. He started his career as an intern at Bit Systems, where he helped design hardware and write software for radios. Craig brings real-world experience to bear in crafting clear and compelling patent applications. An excellent communicator, he excels in demonstrating the novelty of his clients’ innovations and shepherding patent applications through USPTO consideration to achieve strong and valuable patent protection.

Craig grew up in a family of engineers and members of the military. Being precise and clear was a way of life and prepared him well for the work he does now.

When he has the time, Craig enjoys traveling throughout Europe, experiencing other cultures, and spending time with his girlfriend, who lives in England.
