Fish & Richardson Named #1 Top Patent Litigation Firm for 12th Consecutive Year by Corporate Counsel Magazine

Fish & Richardson announced today that it has been named the #1 patent litigation firm in the country for the 12th year in a row by Corporate Counsel magazine.  The annual Corporate Counsel "Patent Litigation Survey" found that Fish handled a total of 201 federal district court patent cases in 2014 – more than twice as many cases as its nearest competitor – and is on track to surpass that number in 2015.

However, as Corporate Counsel noted, "Federal district courts are no longer the defining measure of a firm’s IP litigation activity.  The Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), which has been hearing patent challenges at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for three years, has become a vitally important venue in patent disputes…"  Earlier this year, Managing Intellectual Property ranked Fish the #1 most active law firm at the PTAB for 2014, so the firm dominates this venue as well.

"It is an honor to be named the top patent litigation firm in the country for the 12th consecutive year," said Peter Devlin, President of Fish & Richardson.  "But, it’s also important to remember that it’s not just about being the biggest, it’s about being the best.  Our innovative clients turn to us for their mission-critical, competitor-to-competitor patent litigation because we know how to win – in the courts, at the PTAB, and at the ITC."

Since the beginning of 2014, Fish has won three jury trials, two bench trials, 18 Federal Circuit cases including four precedential wins, and countless summary judgments – all in cases with millions of dollars, and, in some cases, billions of dollars at stake.  Fish also had multiple wins at the U.S. Supreme Court with certiorari granted and denied in favor of the firm’s clients.

Fish’s preeminent Patent Litigation practice includes 245 lawyers in 12 offices worldwide.  The firm has 85 PhDs on staff and over 300 of its attorneys have technical/science degrees.  Fish also has more than 70 former law clerks and nearly 30 former Federal Circuit clerks among its attorneys.  Litigation teams include patent practitioners and post-grant experts who have a deep understanding of clients’ technologies and patent laws who work together with Fish’s seasoned trial lawyers to develop creative and winning litigation strategies to help clients win.

The "Patent Litigation Survey," which will publish in Corporate Counsel’s November 2015 issue, ranks law firms according to how many federal district court patent suits they handled in 2014.
