Overview

Robert Gerhart concentrates his practice on supporting patent prosecution in the areas of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, alternative energy, petroleum engineering, financial services, and medical devices.

Robert’s technical knowledge includes medical devices, automation (e.g., motion control, robotics, vision systems, sensors), human-machine interfaces (HMI), SCADA, measurement and data acquisition, programming (e.g., thickware, web, client/server, embedded systems), aerospace systems, machine learning (e.g., genetic algorithms), online financial trading, wireless (e.g., cellular systems, Wi-Fi, ZigBee), manufacturing systems, operations management, economics/finance, and organizational behavior.

Robert has previous experience as project engineer and director of business and project development for a small local automation systems integration startup, as a robotics software engineer for a local nanotech optoelectronics VC startup, as an independent engineering consultant (to a U.S. Navy subcontractor for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program), and as a test engineer for both Nellcor (Tyco Healthcare) and Medtronic. Robert is also a co-author of A Guide to the Engineering Management Body of Knowledge and The Engineering Management Handbook, both published by The American Society of Engineering Management.

In his free time, Robert enjoys camping with his family, cooking, and participating in community leadership. He is also an avid motorcyclist and gearhead, holding certified membership in the IBA (an association of documented long-distance endurance riders, a.k.a. “World’s Toughest Motorcycle Riders”) and having held a variety of leadership positions in motorcycle rights, safety, and social organizations.
