About Gurneet

Gurneet Singh is an associate in the Silicon Valley office of Fish & Richardson P.C. With over a decade of legal experience, he counsels entities including large multinational companies, startups, and universities on intellectual property strategy.

Gurneet leverages his background in electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, and business to help each client develop strong intellectual property assets that not only protect the creativity of the inventors but also are in line with the client’s business goals. For instance, he has helped protect game-changing technological features in competitive markets, assisted some clients obtain their very first patent and then build a patent portfolio, and assessed the importance and need for keeping various technological aspects as a trade secret instead of filing a patent.

In addition, Gurneet has worked with cross-practice teams in providing guidance on monetizing intellectual property assets through licensing and possible litigation. He has experience analyzing global patent portfolios, identifying strength of portfolios in particular technology areas, and assessing portfolios in litigated areas. He has also helped prepare non-infringement opinions to validate non-infringement positions of technologies or products, and worked on patentability opinions to determine scope of innovations that can be protected in light of identified prior art. Gurneet has also supported litigation needs, including reviewing positions of experts.

While Gurneet focuses his practice in the area of patents, he also addresses other routine intellectual property and related needs of companies. For instance, he has assisted on establishing an open source software program, filed and prosecuted trademark applications, prepared terms and conditions for website usage, drafted privacy policies, and prepared language to be incorporated in various employment agreements.

Prior to being an associate, Gurneet was a patent agent at the firm, including when he attended Rutgers University for law school in the evenings. At graduation from law school, where he was listed on the Dean’s List for many semesters, he was awarded for attaining the highest academic achievement in the intellectual property curriculum. Rutgers also recognized him as an outstanding graduate of the law school.

Gurneet’s engineering experience includes academic research at UCLA Engineering, UCLA School of Medicine, ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology), and Indian Institute of Technology—Bombay. He has taught technology management and economics as a teaching assistant at UCLA, electrical engineering as an instructor for a summer program at UCLA, and tennis as a certified tennis coach. Additionally, Gurneet represented India multiple times in ITF Junior World Ranking Tennis Tournaments in singles and doubles categories.
