Kristine McKinney, Fish & Richardson’s chief professional development officer, said intellectual property firms like hers often struggle to fill their ranks with women. The dearth of women earning advanced degrees in science compounds the legal industry trends, as many intellectual property lawyers must hold both science doctorates and law degrees.

The Mansfield Rule, she said, fits into a six-point diversity initiative that the firm launched in the spring. The firm’s management committee is about 22 percent female, and placing women in positions of power is a priority, McKinney said.

“Our leadership here really gets that creativity and innovation really comes from having diversity on teams,” she said.
