On May 11th, Principal Teresa Lavoie moderated the opening discussion Standing Up for Immigration and Diversity in Biotech at Xconomy’s “What’s Hot in Boston Biotech,” in Cambridge, MA. Teresa’s panel also included speakers Tony Coles, Chairman & CEO of Yumanity Therapeutics and Susan Windham-Bannister, President and CEO, Biomedical Growth Strategies; Managing Partner, Biomedical Innovation Advisors. This discussion included diversity in biotech, as well as the impact that limiting immigration would have on the life sciences industry.

From Xcomony’s recap, “Coles lamented a reason he often hears for a lack of diversity within life science companies: “‘Well, we don’t want to sacrifice or compromise our standards.’ As if somehow racial diversity is equated with a compromise of standards. If you close your eyes literally and figuratively and ask yourself what’s the skill set I need, the solution set of candidates is very different than if you ask that question with your eyes wide open.”
