Background

Theresa M. Dawson is Of Counsel in Fish & Richardson’s Dallas office, where she focuses her practice on patent litigation matters.

Prior to joining Fish & Richardson, Theresa completed a 12-month term appointment as a Special Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of Illinois, where she prosecuted white collar criminal cases.  Among other things, Theresa received guilty verdicts in two jury trials and successfully briefed and argued criminal appeals on behalf of the United States before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.

Theresa’s civil litigation experience includes several years’ experience as an attorney at a prominent intellectual property law firm in Dallas, where she handled the firm’s appellate matters, primarily related to patent litigation, with an emphasis on technology in the semiconductor, electronics, and software industries.  Theresa also was a patent litigation attorney at a prominent large law firm.  In private practice, Theresa has drafted numerous motions and briefs filed at the district court, appellate court, and Supreme Court levels, and she has argued cases before the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Fifth and Federal Circuits.  Notably, Theresa successfully defended a petition for writ of mandamus on behalf of her client that related to a venue transfer order in a patent infringement case originating in the Eastern District of Texas, which resulted in the precedential and oft-cited decision styled In re Vistaprint, 628 F.3d 1342 (Fed. Cir. 2010).

Theresa is a former law clerk for the Honorable Peter T. Fay of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. Theresa received her J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Illinois College of Law, where she was an associate editor of the University of Illinois Journal of Law, Technology & Policy. Prior to law school, Theresa gained several years’ experience as a software programmer and analyst. She received both her B.S. in Business Management and her M.S. in Computer Science from Northern Illinois University.
