Jan Zecher, an Associate in the Munich office of Fish & Richardson, recently published an article on alcohol and the advertising industry in Germany.

Published in the German trade magazine, Markenartikel, the article discussed Germany’s Board for Drugs and Addictions and its push to ban alcohol advertisements across the board for everything from sport facilities to commercials on television and in the cinemas. The board is also calling for the prohibition of alcohol sales at sporting events and are requesting to label beverages with warnings about the dangers of alcohol. Zecher writes how the complete ban of alcohol advertising would seriously hurt the German advertising industry; 560 million euros were spent this past year for alcohol advertisements. The Drug Commissary of the Federal Government has conducted an analysis of the Board for Drugs and Addictions’ recommendations and proposals are slated for this Fall to determine further action.
