January 5, 2010 – Fish & Richardson announced today that Ann Cathcart Chaplin has been named Managing Principal of the Twin Cities office, effective January 1, 2010.  She is the first female managing principal in the history of the firm and the third managing principal of the Twin Cities office, which was established 15 years ago.

As managing principal, Cathcart Chaplin will be responsible for providing overall leadership for the Twin Cities office, including day-to-day oversight as well as defining and implementing long-term goals and objectives.  “Our Twin Cities office is thriving, with a growing roster of regional, national, and international clients,” said Cathcart Chaplin.  “For six years in a row, Fish has been named the top patent litigation firm in the country by IP Law & Business, so it is truly an honor to have the opportunity to lead such a top-notch team.”

The 36 year-old Cathcart Chaplin has held numerous leadership positions since joining Fish’s Twin Cities office in 2001.  She was named a principal in 2005, and assumed the role of recruiting principal for the Twin Cities office in 2006.  She has served as a co-group leader of the litigation group in the office for three years, where she is responsible for overseeing all cases, managing attorneys’ workloads, and reviewing job performance.  Cathcart Chaplin has also served as head of associate training in the Twin Cities.

“I am delighted that Ann has taken on the role of managing principal,” said Mark Ellinger, who has served as Fish’s managing principal for the past seven years.  “She is a brilliant attorney, a great manager, and a true visionary who will provide excellent leadership for our Twin Cities office.”

In addition to serving as managing principal, Cathcart Chaplin will continue her active IP litigation practice, which includes patents, trade secrets, trademarks, and copyrights, and representing clients in federal district court, state court, and in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

Cathcart Chaplin received her J.D., cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 1998.  She received her B.A., summa cum laude, from the University of Minnesota in 1995.  Prior to joining Fish, she was an associate with Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi.  She is admitted to the bar in Minnesota, the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
