HOUSTON – Three YES Prep students are preparing for the adventure of a lifetime thanks to the Houston office of Fish & Richardson.

Victor Aguilar, 14, Michael Alatorre, 13, and Kevin Rodriguez, 13, have been selected to receive full scholarships to attend the U.S. Space & Rocket Center Space Camp July 25-30 in Huntsville, Ala., as part of Fish & Richardson’s 2010 Space Camp Scholarship program.

Started in 1999 to help fuel students’ excitement for the fields of math, science, and technology, the Space Camp Scholarship initiative is one of the firm’s most eagerly anticipated programs.

“We are excited to be able to provide this type of opportunity to these students,” says Garland Stephens, Managing Principal of Fish & Richardson’s Houston office. “The experience can be a real eye-opener for showing how science and math can mesh with technology to accomplish incredible things. We hope their adventure ignites a passion for exploration that lasts the rest of their lives.”

Fish sends 30 students to Space Camp each year along with their chaperones. All of the students are from schools in economically disadvantaged areas in the 10 cities where Fish has offices. Students are selected based on a written application and an in-person interview. Following the camp, students will visit Fish’s offices to “report on their mission.”

During the six-day Space Camp program, students have the opportunity to experience simulated space shuttle missions, participate in programs on space exploration, and learn about mission control. The students receive full tuition to Space Camp, roundtrip airfare and accommodations for themselves and their chaperones, spending money, and a “flight spacesuit” to bring home. For many of the students, the trip to Space Camp is their first experience flying in an airplane and seeing a different part of the United States.
