The FCC Announces Auction of Paging Licenses

April 4, 2013

Back to News Listing

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced that it will auction more than 5,000 paging licenses in the VHF low band (35/43 MHz), VHF high band (152/158 MHz), UHF band (454/459 MHz) and 900 MHz band starting July 16, 2013.

The frequency bands are allocated for paging services, including one-way messaging, two- way messaging and fixed wireless services.  However, the FCC has shown flexibility in granting waivers to utility companies and others for these frequencies to be used for other purposes, such as two-way mobile voice communications and private land mobile network operations. Companies that need additional communications capacity may wish to consider participating in this auction.

A complete list of licenses and other information regarding the specific licenses available for auction can be found on the FCC’s website.  In a few cases, the available license may not cover the entire geographic area because of an excluded area or previous partitioning.  There key dates for the upcoming auction are:

·         May 9:  Short-form Applications due by 6:00 PM (EDT)

·         June 13: Upfront payments (deposit) due

·         July 16: Auction begins
