FCC Announces Auction of Paging Licenses

December 2, 2009

Back to News Listing

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced that it will auction more than 9,000 paging licenses in the VHF low band (35/43 MHz), VHF high band (152/158 MHz), UHF band (454/459 MHz) and 900 MHz band starting May 25, 2010. The frequency bands are allocated for paging services, including one-way messaging, two-way messaging and fixed wireless services. Although these frequencies were allocated for paging services, the FCC has shown flexibility in granting waivers to utility companies and others to permit use of these frequencies for other purposes, such as in systems used for private internal voice communications. Companies that need additional communications capacity may wish to consider participating in this auction. A complete list of licenses and other information regarding the specific licenses available for auction can be found on the FCC’s website. In a few cases, the available license does not cover the entire geographic area because of an excluded area or previous partitioning.

The FCC is inviting comments on proposed rules for the auction itself, with comments due December 21, 2009, and reply comments due January 7, 2010.
