An interview with the Houston Business Journal

Some parents would be elated if one of their children decided to become a lawyer. Having already followed his dad’s footsteps into chemical engineering, John Lane had some explaining to do.

Partly in jest, Lane said his dad had some mixed feelings about his desire to go to law school. But ultimately, the younger Lane, now the managing partner in the Houston office of Boston-based intellectual property firm Fish & Richardson PC, convincingly laid the groundwork for his own best advice: “Find something you like to do, and do it passionately and do it well.”

In 2002, Lane earned a law degree from The University of Texas at Austin and immediately began working in intellectual property law with Weil, Gotschal & Manges in New York. A transfer landed him in Houston seven years ago, and he’s been with Fish for four years, serving the last 12 months as managing partner.

Lane talked with Houston Business Journal reporter Deon Daugherty about his transition from medical student to patent litigator, in which he represents some of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies.
