Fish & Richardson principal Juanita Brooks has been named one of California’s 2012 Top 100 Lawyers by the Daily Journal. Daily Journal, the largest legal newspaper in California, looks for lawyers who have “moved the needle, had a impact on the legal industry, the state, the nation and the world” to make California’s Top 100 Lawyers list. More than 1000 lawyers were considered.

As one of California’s 2012 Top 100 Lawyers, Brooks was recognized for her tenacious patent infringement work in the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals. Representing Microsoft Corp., she appealed a $358 million jury award to Lucent and was able to reduce the award to $26.3 million after a second trial. Brooks considered the award still too high and appealed a second time. She was able to reach a confidential settlement for Microsoft for far less than the jury award. Since then, that case, Lucent Technologies, Inc. v. Gateway, Inc., 580 F.3d 1301 (Fed. Cir 2009), has given the Federal Circuit guidance on setting similar patent infringement damages and is often referenced in other like cases.

Brooks has received many awards for trial work throughout her 35 years of legal practice. Every year since 1987, Brooks’ peers have voted her as one of the Best Lawyers in America. In April of this year Brooks was named one of California’s Top 75 Intellectual Property Litigators by the Daily Journal.

In November 2011, Law360 named Brooks as one of the ten intellectual property “IP MVP’s” nationwide. She was the only woman to achieve this recognition.

Brooks joined Fish & Richardson in 2000 to focus solely on intellectual property litigation.

She resides in Del Mar, California.
