A September 2006 survey published in IP Law360 gives kudos to Fish & Richardson and places the firm in the number-one spot as the most frequently hired firm over the past year.

The survey’s rankings are based on new patent cases from July 2005 through June 2006, as reflected by U.S. District Court and Circuit Court dockets. Out of the 250+ largest law firms surveyed in the United States, Fish & Richardson out-ranked competitors with 79 new cases, as well as beat the number-two firm, Jones Day, by 22 cases.

David M. Barkan, who heads up the IP litigation practice group in the Silicon Valley office, is quoted: “We’re please to be number one again. It’s a reflection that clients vote with their feet,” and added that the firm has also been hiring talent through lateral growth, which helps attract new clients. “In the past five years we’ve grown tremendously, acquiring people from industries where we didn’t previously have a presence. That’s a significant part of our overall growth.”

Barkan also credits the firm’s success to repeat litigations and multiple litigations as another attraction for new clients. He also references Southern California Principal, Juanita Brooks, whose defense won a verdict that 24 claims in four patents were invalid for obviousness.
