Overview

Matthew Wernli advises on and assists clients in all aspects of intellectual property protection and value optimization.

Matt prosecutes patents for mechanical, electrical, and electro-mechanical devices and software, oilfield production and drilling equipment, green technologies, nuclear reactor and HVAC systems, consumer products, and engines and related control systems. He helps clients secure strong patents and advises on infringement risks.

Before joining Fish & Richardson, Matt was a judicial intern for the Honorable E. Lee Yeakel of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas. Before attending law school, Matt was a sales engineer for York International Corp. and was twice awarded the York International Gold Eagle Award signifying the top 10 sales representatives in the U.S.

In addition to representing corporate clients, Matt represents veterans on a pro bono basis, helping them pursue patent protection for their inventions through Workshops for Warriors, a 501(c)(3) organization based in San Diego that helps veterans successfully train and get placed in their chosen advanced manufacturing career fields. Matt also works pro bono drafting wills and other advanced directive legal documents for people in need through Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides civil legal services to low-income people through attorney volunteers in Travis County, Texas.
