More than 2,000 public comments were submitted to the Advisory Committee on Civil Rules regarding proposed changes to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.  Last week, the Committee approved many of those proposed changes.  Bloomberg BNA reported on the Committee meeting.

In particular, the Committee approved proposals to amend Rule 26 to require that discovery be proportional to the needs of the case.  The Committee also agree to delete Rule 84 and Form 18 for patent complaints.

The Committee withdrew the proposals to reduce presumptive limits on discovery.  The Committee approved a revised version of Rule 37(e) regarding sanctions.

The Agenda book for the meeting is available on the U.S. Courts’ website.  The proposed amendments will next be submitted to the Standing Committee at the end of May.
