Personalized Medicine

Please join Fish & Richardson as we launch a series of monthly breakfast seminars on biotech and pharmaceutical patent law topics in our new offices at Fan Pier on the South Boston waterfront. The first two seminars of the series will be devoted to the increasingly important topic of Personalized Medicine.Part 1: On November 17, 2010, TerryMahn and Janis Fraser will explore the difficulties as well as the significant patent opportunities posed by the FDA’s push to improve therapeutic outcomes by increasing customization of known treatments–often by linking the treatments to biomarkers and diagnostic assays. Terry and Janis will also explain how such follow-on inventions can be used strategically to extend product life or slow generic entry, and show both how inherent anticipation problems come to the fore in attempts to claim such follow-on inventions, and how to solve those problems.Part 2: In the second seminar, on December 15, 2010, Jay Kugler DeYoung and Mark Ellinger will describe several types of inventions within the general field of Personalized Medicine, such as diagnostic assays and reagents, genomic markers, and methods of treatment. Jay and Mark will explain how to (and how not to) claim these inventions, the sorts of patentability issues that can be expected, and practical ways to deal with those issues.

Participation is free, but please sign up in advance for either or both seminars by emailing Liz Giliberti at giliberti@fr.com. We will validate parking in our building.
