Workshop: What a Chemist Needs to Know About Patents
Eifion Phillips

On January 27, 2012 Eifon Philips (Delaware) will be speaking at a workshop in Windlesham, England. Inventorship and ownership of patents and Patentability from a U.S. perspective.
(IP) is one of the major outputs of all R&D organisations, and yet for most scientists it remains an area unknown or not well understood. SCI’s Young Chemists Panel, in collaboration with Eli Lilly and Company will hold this one-day workshop to debunk the myths.
The day will feature modules from Darren Smyth and Graham Burnett-Hall from Marks & Clerk solicitors, Eifion Phillips, U.S. Patent Attorney from Fish & Richardson and Peter Elliott, European Patent Attorney from Unilever. The programme will have the full spectrum of patent activities; from what makes inventions patentable, to the drafting of patents and patent specifications, through infringement and endorsement and how to determine the value of your patent portfolio.
The sessions will showcase how to read and understand patents, the legal frameworks under which patents are filed and granted, and the key factors which must be included for a patent to be valid. The day will conclude with a case study exploring a real Unilever patent case, followed by a lively Q&A session.
